When WE Were Here

Single channel video, 2026

work in progress

When We Were Here, is a hybrid documentary in which young adults imagine themselves as elders looking back on their lives from the vantage point of the year 2070.

I worked with 5 college student between the ages of 18 and 24 for six weeks over the summer of 2026 to devise characters based on their own forecasts and concerns for the future.

Framed as oral history interviews with people in their sixties connected to the Elizabeth River, the film presents these constructed testimonies as acts of speculation: what global and local events impacted these individuals, what choices were made, what was endured?

The rehearsals, writing sessions, and dialogue that shaped each testimony will be woven into the recorded oral histories.

Part portrait, part process film, this video project sits at the intersection of documentary, and speculative thought.
